Rebecca Earle

Rebecca Earle is Professor in the History Department of the University of Warwick. Her research concerns the cultural and intellectual history of colonial and independent Spanish America. Her most recent work, The Body of the Conquistador: Food, Race and the Colonial Experience (2012) investigates the centrality of food to the construction of the colonial body, and of colonial space more generally, in the early modern Hispanic world. Her book The Return of the Native: Indians and Mythmaking in Spanish America, 18101930 (2007), examined nineteenth-century elite nationalism’s engagement with the preconquest past. She also published Spain and the Independence of Colombia, 18101825 (2000), and explored in her research various matters concerning political culture and cultural politics in Spain’s colonial world.
