Geoffrey Ellis

Geoffrey Ellis was until 2004 a Lecturer in French history at Oxford University, and an Official Fellow and Tutor in Modern History of Hertford College, of which he is now an Emeritus Fellow. His main research interests lie in French history of the period 1789–1815. He is the author of Napoleon’s Continental Blockade: The Case of Alsace (1981); The Napoleonic Empire (1991; 2nd revised and enlarged edn. 2003); and Napoleon (1997/2000). The latter two titles, essentially works of synthesis, have been translated into a number of European and Asian languages. He has also published several articles, essays in collected volumes, and conference papers on (among other subjects) Marxist interpretations of the French Revolution, Napoleonic social elites, the revolution of 1848 in France, religion according to Napoleon, and the nature of Napoleonic imperialism. He is currently writing An Economic History of the French Revolution 1787–1799.
