Francisco Bethencourt

Francisco Bethencourt is Charles Boxer Professor and a leading authority on the history of the Portuguese-speaking World. He also specialized in religious history and the relations between Europe and the World. His many book publications include: Historia das inquisições: Portugal, Espanha e Italia (1996); Portuguese Oceanic Expansion, 14001800 (ed. with Diogo Ramada Curto, 2007); The Inquisition: A Global History, 14781834 (2009), which is the first comparative history of the Inquisition, from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century, published in six countries (France, Portugal, Spain, Brazil, United Kingdom and Serbia). Recently Bethencourt has been working on racism and ethnic relations, including visual cultural in his approach. He is now completing a new monograph on the History of Racism. He also co-edited with Adrian Pearce a volume on Race and Ethnic Relations in the Portuguese-speaking World. He is preparing a new project on material culture and inequality in world history.
